Further consultation on NSW coastal reforms

Media release – 25 February 2016

Planning Minister Rob Stokes today announced a second stage of targeted consultation on the NSW Government’s coastal reforms, in response to valuable community feedback already obtained during the initial consultation phase.

Mr Stokes said that proposals for a new Coastal Management State Environmental Planning Policy (SEPP) had been on public exhibition since November last year and a full draft of the SEPP and corresponding maps would also be released separately for public comment in the coming months.

“The coast is the home of our state’s ‘saltwater economy’, it’s a vital economic zone that supports much of the state’s industrial and commercial activity and  we  want  to ensure we have thriving, resilient coastal communities now and into the future.

“Like our coast, we want this reform package to stand the test of time and I’d urge all those who live, work and play on the coast to engage during the consultation phases,” Mr Stokes said.

Prior to the second phase of consultation, the NSW Government will also consult with coastal councils to ensure mapping aspects of the reforms are developed using local information and knowledge.

Current public consultation (until 29 February 2016):

  • A draft Bill for a new Coastal Management Act;
  • A new Coastal Management Manual; and
  • Proposals for a new Coastal Management SEPP.

Future public consultation in 2016:

  • A full draft of the SEPP; and
  • Maps of the coastal management areas.

The government will not finalise the coastal reforms until the second stage of public consultation is completed. For more information, and to make a submission and have your say, visit http://haveyoursay.nsw.gov.au
