This morning the unimaginable has happened. A Liberal politician has broken ranks with his own party to raise serious concerns about Premier Baird’s new land clearing laws.
Bruce Notley-Smith, Member of Parliament for Coogee said:
“I am very concerned that these reforms could lead to further irreversible land degradation and endangerment of native wildlife habitat.”
Bruce is right and we need more MPs to stand up for nature. Will you take a minute to thank Bruce Notley-Smith for taking a stand by emailing him on coogee@parliament.nsw.gov.au or leaving a message on his facebook page here.
Premier Baird’s plans to scrap our land clearing laws are disastrous for wildlife and they’re beginning to unravel.
Just last week one of the chief scientists behind the new laws quit because he was so concerned about what the Government had planned, read more here. Momentum is building. Let’s keep the pressure up.
Premier Baird’s new land clearing laws could be in Parliament this week so there’s no time to lose.
Have you asked your MP to oppose these new laws? It’s a little tricky to find your MP’s details, but it’s worth the effort. You can find your electorate using your postcode here, then google the name of your electorate and you’ll find your Member of Parliament. It takes 30 seconds and will really leave an impact on your MP. I’ve included some key points below.
Thanks for all you’ve done so far. It’s crunch time for the future of wildlife in our state, let’s make it count.

Key points you might like to raise with your member of Parliament:
- Please don’t support the land-clearing changes which will soon be in Parliament – they have little to do with biodiversity conservation and everything to do with fast-tracking land clearing and property development.
- The experts have warned these laws will “increase the rate of species extinctions”.
- The Wentworth Group of Concerned Scientists, including Professor Hugh Possingham, one of the NSW Biodiversity Review Independent Panel’s four members, wrote this in a letter of concern sent to all NSW MPs.
- For too long Premier Mike Baird has allowed the National Party to write our environment policy. It’s time for our politicians to stand up with the majority who support strong protections for our wildlife and bushland.
- If these laws go through there will likely be a rush to clear trees. This will be embarrassing for the government, and make them look like environmental vandals.
